Some FAL action!!

Finally! I'm so excited to be working on my Colour Blocks quilt again (free pattern by Tula Pink). I started this quilt around Christmas time last year, and I've been working on it in dribs and drabs. It's the perfect quilt to do that with, since it's broken down into bite-sized sections. I've been cutting each colour as I go, so I'm not getting confused with where I'm at when I leave it for a few weeks at a time ;o) I only have a few more of the sections to piece, and then start putting the other side together as well. So. Excited.

This is the entire right hand side of the quilt - it measures 24" x about 96" (not the best photo sorry - I nearly killed myself climbing on our old rickety outdoor table taking this one.) I'm really excited about how this is coming together - I love how the different purples play together, and pick up some of the colours in the fabrics. It's not all purple by the way - there is another smaller purple section on the other side of the quilt, but the rest of it is mainly blues and neutrals, with a few pops of pink.

I must say I'm getting a wee bit nervous about the prospect of actually quilting it. And basting it. It's going to finish up at around 85" x 96" which is HUGE compared to anything I've done so far...

Hoping to get a bit more done over the weekend :o)

WIP Wednesday - a growing (retro) flower garden

Not a whole lot of sewing since last Wednesday - we've been struck down with gastro and colds and general grumpiness. I have managed to put a few more flowers together though...

Nine done - so more than half way! I'd forgotten how painful all the trimming was with these - definitely my least favorite part of these blocks. I've found my groove with them now though and I'm finding it SO much easier to get the seams to match - there has only been a small amount of unsewing ;o)

But the other seven flowers are now trimmed as well, so it's just a matter of sewing them all together :o) Now it's getting closer I'm trying to decide how to quilt it - no firm ideas yet, I think there will be a lot of sketching before I tackle the quilting part!

In the next week, I need to get my bee blocks done (and my next tutorial for the QAL) so I'll be having a wee break from these. Still, it's so nice to be knocking over a WIP at last!

WIP Wednesday - Still Quilting

Firstly, I apologise for another post full of quilting close ups - just a warning there will probably be lots of these over the next few weeks. Groove is taking FOREVER to quilt (some motifs more than others) but it's pretty rewarding (thankfully!) and I'm pretty happy so far. So far I've quilted about 40" x 25" or so (which is about 1/6 of the quilt) and it's taken about 5 or 6 hours so far. And this has been the easy edge bit - the middle is going to cause some headaches I think ;o)

So, the quilty shots :o) I'm using a combination of motifs I've done before (echo shells, pebbles), one I've kind of winged it (the azure section - although it's my dodgy version of McTavishing), and I've used Angela Walter's book for inspiration for the others (seafoam - mine is nothing like hers!!!, and paisley).

I'm aiming for a mix of pointy and curved textures - and I think it works? I've never quilted anything this big this densely before, so I'll be interested to see what kind of drape it has once I'm done.

Linking up to WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced - looking forward to seeing what everyone has been working on this week :o)

It's growing slowly...

Since I posted last, I actually managed to make some good progress on my Hopscotch quilt (any ideas for names for this one? I've decided my quilts deserve better names that the obvious descriptive ones I come up with. And considering I even struggled to name my babies, I have no hope on coming up with good names for quilts...)

I apologise for the awful photos - one of my kids has been trying to poke their fingers in my camera shutter which has caused havoc with it's focus and ability to photograph. On top of that the light here has been terrible (plus this is all stuck on my design wall so I can't move it to better light. So you'll have to bear with me :o)) So it grew from this:

And with a few more blocks and a bit of swapping around it now looks like this:

Roughly 1/3 done (well 23 blocks done of 77, so close enough). You can see how it's trying to migrate off the design wall - my solution is to tape a piece of batting to the door next to it, and use that as a dodgy design wall extension. I'm really scared about putting the blocks together - I am pretty sure my points are going to be a nightmare.

I've also been working on finally putting together my little guy's quilt - he helped me design and choose fabrics for it months ago, and I keep putting him off which I feel terrible about. But he keeps coming into my sewing room and declaring how awesome the Hopscotch quilt is and how since I haven't made him a quilt yet, it will have to be his (I love 7 year old common sense!) So I've promised I will make his first before I finish Hopscotch :o) No photos yet, but they will be coming (along with a tutorial I hope!)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Hopscotch and happy mail

I've made a bit of headway with my Hopscotch quilt - 8 blocks done (out of nearly 80 - so still a long ways to go!)

I'm pretty happy with how it's coming together - my points are not perfect at all, but they're only off by a couple of millimetres so I'm not going to fix them. I've decided to go a bit scrappy with the triangle points - so the stars will be green/black but with a few different fabrics thrown in. As you can see, some of the triangle centres will be black too (in the interest of having some value difference between the lighter fabrics and their centres). I'm cutting and sewing each block individually, so I'm really making up the layout as I go along - I'm just not sure what I'll do when I run out of space on my design wall...

I am really, really enjoying the process of making this quilt - I'm taking it slow and really just focusing on the joy of making it. It's a bit of a revelation for me. I do love sewing, but I think I tend to get really focussed on getting something finished, rather than enjoying the process of making it.

I had a bit of happy mail arrive today too. I was extremely excited to recieve an email a couple of weeks ago to say I'd won the giveaway on the Stash Books blog for Angela Walters newly released Free-Motion Quilting book. You may have noticed how much I love the quilting part of making quilts - I am so excited by the ideas and designs she presents. I can't wait to try out some of her ideas - especially on my Mendocino quilt and my Hopscotch quilt when they're done!

I've only flipped through it so far, and I can't wait to read it more thoroughly tonight.

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

Spring Carnival

Since finishing cutting all my fabric for my Precious Retro Flowers quilt, I've been trying to work out what to do with the considerable pile of scraps. When I started cutting, I didn't think about it all that well, and followed the pattern instructions even though I was using acrylic templates. After chatting with Katy about how she did it, I realised (much too late...) that I could have avoided my weird shaped scraps...

Anyhoo, I decided the perfect way to use my funny shaped scraps was to cut them up for some EPP - using the other Katy's Spring Carnival templates

It's going to be a scrappy version, with the triangles and squares using Good Folks prints, and the hexies will be the cream script print from Ooh La La by Bunny Hill (see, I'm trying to be one of the cool kids and use some text fabric ;o) ). I'm hoping it will be done in time for our spring in a few months time...

I'm really enjoying the process of making this - it's the perfect snuggle on the couch and watch tv project in the midst of a very cold winter.

WIP Thursday (again!)

Thanks for all your feedback on the Joyce baby quilt from last week. After much consideration I've decided to make another one. I like it, but I don't love it and this baby (who arrived on Saturday, a few weeks early, and who is totally divine by the way) needs the perfect quilt. So I'm trying to decide what to do... there are a few ideas percolating somewhere in there :o)

I've mostly been working on my Retro Flowers quilt this week. Not a lot of sewing has actually been happening - my kids have decided that 9pm is the best time to actually go to sleep. By that time of night, I'm much more interested in some TV time than the cold sewing room so my motivation hasn't been all that great. I have managed to get 6 flowers together though (nearly a quarter of them, yay!) These first ones are some of the more difficult prints to work with. I'm still not entirely sure if the 'abstract' appearance of some of the petals work, but I think once they're all part of the quilt it will look okay.

I have been cutting for another quilt over the last month or so (very slowly...) - an EPP one so I'm thinking its going to be a long time in the making! It's (obviously) totally inspired by Katy's Spring Carnival pattern but the layout will be totally different. I'm still not entirely sure where it's going, but I'm loving playing with these fabrics and creating patterns with them.

To any bee hives mates reading this, my May bee blocks are next in line (I know, last minute as usual) and will be done in the next day or two. Promise!

My Precious Retro Flowers Update

Now that I've finally gotten my other commitments out of the way, I'm back into the swing of My Precious Retro Flowers. I am determined to do this one through to the finish now I have time (although there does need to be a wee babby quilt made in the next few weeks for my bestie, who's about to have baby number 5...)

So. I still only have one complete flower done (and the petals are still seperate).

But I have actually been working on it! This is my pile of sewn and trimmed curves:

My pile of curves ready to be trimmed:

My stack of fabrics ready to be cut:

My cut fabric ready to be sewn:

And a couple of flowers ready to be pressed and trimmed.

The plan at this stage is to make 25 flowers, and have a wider border (around 10") so we can use this one on our bed.

I'm hoping to have a few more flowers done by the end of the weekend!

Gadgets and Petals

You may remember a little while ago I was excited about getting a Curve Master foot for my sewing machine. And was then pissed off disappointed to find when I read the small print that my Bernina required a shank adapter in order to use said Curve Master. I bit the bullet and ordered the shank adapter, hoping all the while that the foot was going to be worth the outlay. I am very relieved pleased to say it was totally worth it. It's my new favorite sewing gadget!

 My curve master foot.

Obviously it's designed to make curved piecing easy. And it does - once you get used to moving the fabric through the foot (you need to hold the top piece up in the air) its very quick and painless to sew accurate curves. What I didn't realise is that it also allows you to sew a perfect scant 1/4" seam on straight piecing too. For someone who is accurate-seam-allowance challenged (like me for example) it is so worth getting one! Plus all my curves sit really flat, and I've had no problems with puckering etc - all due to the foot, not my abilities :o)

I still actually haven't finished cutting my fabric for the Retro Flowers QAL, but I wanted to give some piecing a go so I've cut enough for a few flowers (and will do the rest when I need to. Not in any great hurry to get back to the cutting!)

First petal attempt - you can see the side seams aren't perfectly matched - I'm not really that phased by them (and you can't really notice from a distance, and I'm too lazy to unpick and resew them)

Second petal attempt - a bit better than number one, the seams pretty well match up perfectly (yay!!) Not sure what I did differently for this one, but the seams are much more accurate.

I promise I won't bore you with any more petal by petal accounts for this quilt - I'm just so impressed with the curve master I couldn't resist.

The other gadgety thing I've gotten this week isn't all that gadgety, but it is extremely useful, so I guess that counts as kind of a gadget, right? The supplies have been sitting in the garage for a month or so... but Mr E is on holidays for the next couple of weeks, and I finally conned him into setting up my design wall. I apologise for the truly awful photo - my sewing room/study is too small to get far enough away to get a decent photo, so it's taken from the side... Anyway, it's simply constructed by covering three pieces of 3mm thick MDF board with batting (I think they were each 120mm x 60mm), taping the batting to the back, and then nailing the boards onto two 180mm long planks of wood. So it's portable and not too heavy to move around, and it's the perfect size for the space between our filing cabinet and the doorway in my sewing space (the only wall in there that isn't a window or taken up with shelves).

Right, back to some more curved piecing. Oh and trying to come up with something brilliant to make with this little bundle of prettiness for a Fat Quarterly Designer challenge...

WIP Wednesday: HST finishes!

Wow, this is my third post today. Heh. The other two were Festival of HST entry posts though so I really did have to split it into separate posts...

Anyway. I have had two finishes in the last couple of days. My Outfoxed on the High Seas quilt (you can read more about it here)

And my Rainbow Trail mini (blogged here)

Mojo is definitely back I'm happy to say! So plans for this week are to put together my iPad case I mentioned last Wednesday (didn't get any further than a few drawings and picking the fabric) and my biggest boy's giant chevron quilt. I am getting frequent 'so where's my quilt, mum?' so I really need to do that before I get onto anything else!

WIP stats for this week:

New Projects: 1
* Giant chevron quilt for Finn

Finished: 2

In progress: 5
* iPad case
* Retro flowers QAL - at fabric selection stage still. So undecided about what to use!
* Baby quilt - no progress
* Swoon - completed 5/9 blocks (no progress)
* Stained QAL - no progress

Long term WIPs: 3
* Outfoxed on the High Seas  DONE!! Yay!
* Fandango
* Pop garden
plus a few other abandoned projects that may never see the light of day again ;)

I'm linking up to WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced - go check out what awesome stuff everyone's been doing :o)

Weekend sewing

I have been flitting between projects like a crazy butterfly recently. After finishing my sushi quilt early last week, I've been at a loose end. I had a few hours on Tuesday when my mum looked after my boys (who have had a week of school holidays) to sew and faffed around and got nothing achieved apart from sewing a few pieces to some random blocks. Then got pissed off with myself and grumped around for the rest of the day.

Wednesday I tried to convince my 5 year old to let me make him a quilt (it was his birthday on Friday, so I thought a late birthday quilt would be nice). Complete lack of interest. Which is weird, since he love snuggling under the other quilts in the house. Then Mr. 7 decided he would like a quilt, and the fun began. I've had a giant chevron quilt planned in my head for months, so I drew a sketch for Finn he loved it. He helped me design it, picked out fabrics and is really excited about it. I got it all cut on Thursday and sewed all the HST blocks together on Friday night. And then lost all motivation.

I thought I'd lost my sewing mojo. Seriously devasted. I have so many projects started, and so many in my head wanting to be made, and I just. couldn't. do it. And then I had this crazy idea that maybe I should actually finish something off. Maybe I should actually start seeing projects through from start to finish. Not all the time, obviously (I don't think I can work that way) but sometimes.

So I picked up my Outfoxed on the High Seas quilt top and did some sketches to work out how to quilt it. And just like that my sewing mojo was back! I've been quilting it tonight and I think it's going to work pretty well:

This is the quilt top I'm talking about - I have a love-hate relationship with this quilt so I'll be glad to finish it.

See how there are light wave shapes alternated with dark wave shapes? I've decided to connect with my inner Angela Walters (yeah, right!!) and quilt the light ones with a feathery type motif and the dark ones with a flowery design. I quilted my first light one, and then unpicked most of it (I forgot to take photos) because I didn't think ahead at all, and it looked awful. The next go was slightly better - not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it considering I've never done feathers before. It's a bit hard to see the stitching cos I'm using Aurifil 50wt cream thread and it's disappearing into the quilt beautifully. I'm hoping it will mostly be the texture rather than visible quilting.

Same thing with the first dark one. Quilting, then frogging. Second go wasn't too bad if you don't look too closely ;o)

So wish me luck. I've had this very late realisation (like five minutes ago) that this quilt is in fact almost entirely made from HSTs. Which means it's a perfect candidate for the Festival of HSTs at Canoe Ridge Creations. Which means I need to get it done in the next 48 hours or so to enter it. Bets on whether I can do it?

Stained QAL - a start

Stained QAL
Ok so I'm a month and a half late to the party (middle of March already? Yikes!) but I've been so inspired by some of the Stained QAL tops popping up I pulled a bundle of fabrics out the other day and have spent this weekend stealing some cutting time.

I should back track a little. Last weekend, I mananged to convince Mr Elven Garden that I really needed some shelves in our bedroom to stash my fabric. Surprisingly he agreed (:oD) and so this week I spent a LOT of time this week folding all my fabric (sort of using Jeni's tutorial) and putting it on my new shelves. It's been a bit of an eye opener for me (in a good way) to see exactly how much fabric I have. It's a bit ridiculous, and now the other half is commenting on our 'bedroom fabric shop'... hence I am actually on a fabric diet. For a while at least ;o)

It's mostly sorted by colour, but I couldn't bring myself to split up some of my collections - so Lizzy House has her own shelf and I've kept things like my Japanese linen, AMH, Heather Bailey, Saffron Craig etc together. It was also a great way to pick out some bits to list in Lucy's Stale Stash Swap this Tuesday :o).

Anyhoo, back to the QAL (since this post was meant to be about that!!) When I was folding and sorting,  I kept coming back to an idea of using Saffron Craig's Magical Lands for the Stained quilt. I pulled a few other prints as well and came up with this little stack:

I've cut all the pieces (Sarah's instructions are amazing! It could have been a nightmare, but it totally wasn't.) and now I'm trying to decide on sashing colour. Some help here would be awesome ;o) I'm trying to decide between this one (Kona PFD):

And this one (Kona Hibiscus):

Or I do have enough black which might work... I'm really, really stuck on it. I love the purple, but I think the whitey one my help the colours pop more. Which would you choose? I need to make Just Wing It #2 first before I start cutting sashing anyway (so lots of time to try and decide...) but I'd really appreciate some input :o)

WIP Wednesday - Just Wing It #1

I did a small blog revamp last night, and I now have a 'current WIP' page so I can keep track of what I need to finish off - although I really can't imagine that will stop me starting new projects anyway :-p

I've been sewing up a storm this week, getting the first of my commission quilts done - I've nearly finished the quilt top. I will be about 55" x 85" when its done, and I'm struggling to get a good photo, because it's been raining and I don't have anywhere inside to hang it...

This is the main central panel (really crappy photo sorry) - mostly Just Wing It by Momo with some Just Dandy, metro circles and a white/pink/red polka dot print (not sure what collection its from...) I'm hoping to get this one finished, basted and quilted in the next week or so, and then get started on the second one.

WIP stats:

In progress: 3
* Swoon - completed 5/9 blocks
* Commissioned quilts - first quilt top nearly done, second one cut ready to assemble.
* Secret project

Long term WIPs: 3
* Outfoxed on the High Seas
* Fandango
* Pop garden
plus a few other abandoned projects that may never see the light of day again ;)

WIP Wednesday with a few more finishes!

I am so glad to have a few more finishes this week. Phew, my WIP pile is not shrinking exactly, but I am getting somewhere at least!

I finished off my FTLOS big item (post here), and now just have to package it up with the small item (*cough* yet to be decided on *cough*) and send it off to the other side of the world. Yikes!

I finished my Modern Mini Quilt Challenge quilt. It's so tempting to show you all, but I want to wait till the 5th. Not sure why, its not really anything special, I just want to keep it under wraps!

I've discussed with my client and finalised the fabrics I'll be using for her commissioned quilts. We've decided on (mostly) Just Wing It by Momo as it matches her daughters' room's decor quite perfectly, with a few additional prints thrown in. I've been stashing prints from the collection for a while, and I'm really looking forward to starting to put these together, as I love the fabrics and I think (hope) they'll be really great quilts. While I was chatting to her on Sunday, she asked if I could put together a library bag for her daughter who's just started kindergarten. I obliged - its nice to get back to my non-quilty-sewing roots occasionally and I had some Flower Fairies fabric I was struggling to come up with a plan for. I've used Jeni's drawstring bag pattern and it is totally fantastic! I plan on making a few of these for my own kidlets for toys etc.

I've appliqued her daughter's name on it - and got to try out a few stitches on my machine that I've never used, which was fun! It does a really great blanket stitch which looks really cool around the letters. It's very sparkly and girly and I'd imagine her little girl will love it (what little girl doesn't love fairies?)

I've also made a bit of progress on my secret project.

WIP Stats:
Finished: 2
* For the Love of Solids project - DONE!!
* Modern Mini Quilt challenge - DONE!!

In progress: 3
* Swoon - completed 5/9 blocks
* Commissioned quilts - almost finished cutting (120 6" squares, 100 3"x6" rectangles and LOTS of white sashing - about 4 yards worth!)
* Secret project

Long term WIPs: 3
* Outfoxed on the High Seas
* Fandango
* Pop garden
plus a few other abandoned projects that may never see the light of day again ;)

I'm linking up to WIP wednesday over at Freshly Pieced (see link on left hand sidebar) - pop over and see all the other quilty inspiration!

WIP Wednesday - the one with a new obsession

I've had a fun week this week, trying a new-to-me technique: English paper piecing! I'm loving it, cos I can sit on the couch and sew and watch a bit of TV (Mr Elven Garden is working interstate at the moment, so I'm a bit tired most nights to sew on the machine.) I can only give you sneak peeks so far - this one is my mini quilt for the Modern Mini challenge:

And this is a secret project (so you won't be seeing any more of this one ;) )

Other that these new projects (I just can't help myself!!) I've finished off the quilting on my FTLOS project, and have made the binding so its ready to be finished finally. I've run out of thread though, so its waiting on me getting into the city to buy some more :)

I also finished and posted my Name Game swap mini quilt - and my partner has recieved it and likes it (so relieved - first swap and I was really nervous that she wouldn't like it...)

I'm linking up to WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced (no WIP stats this week - it will just depress me, what with the new projects and lack of finishes ;) )

Rainbow trail mini - progress

I am a little (well, okay more than a little) obsessed with these blocks at the moment. I'm really enjoying playing around with colours and value with them and seeing what I can create. I've decided to make a snail trail block for my 4x5 Bee hive members (yes I know. MORE of them...) and one of our group asked for rainbow colours with a dark grey background. Cue me trying to work out how to make it work, and pulling a couple of piles of rainbow fabrics (SO much fun - I'd never done it before, but I see some rainbow quilts in my future!)

I decided to make a couple of trial blocks to see how it worked - and then though I might as well make them into a mini while I was at it. So I made four rainbow snail trail blocks over the last couple of nights. My original plan was a layout something like this:

But once I'd made the blocks it just didn't look quite right - not how I'd imagined it. I actually stuffed up the blocks when I sewed the four patches - I wanted the light and dark grey to alternate on the sides (which I think would have looked better). So then I tried flipping tow of the blocks to create this:

Again, it didn't quite look like I wanted - and I didn't like how the eye was drawn to that centre bit. So I flipped them all so that the centre of the mini was the light and dark grey:

I really like this placement. I love the rainbow running around the edges of the quilt, and how the greys look in the centre. So I sewed them together, and was pleasantly surprised by how well the points matched up (a bit of easing required though ;) ) I started quilting it last night with straight lines about 1/4" apart. I toyed with doing dense FMQ on the grey, but the geometric lines in the quilt really sang straight lines so I went with that. I'm pretty happy with how it looks so far:

I don't think I'll quilt the coloured parts at all (or if I do, just do a single line of quilting close to the edge). I'll straight line quilt the corner sections as well.

I'm stoked to nearly have my first finish of 2012 - yay for mini quilts :)

Happy stitching,
Jess

Choosing fabrics for (another) project

I spent tonight pulling out fabrics for a couple of commissioned quilts I'm starting. My lovely customer has been really great with the decision process and has sent me a few photos of her daughters' bedroom in which the quilts will live. This is a photo of the blind in their room, with the colours she'd like in the quilts.

I actually had a bunch of fabrics pulled together which matched these colours pretty well, so I have used most of them and added  a more as well.

I think I need to add a few more greens to it (possibly some Freebird by Momo?) but I think they'll work pretty well together. My client has requested a lot of white in it as well, so that should balance out the busy-ness of some of these prints. There are lots of my favorite designers there (Kate Spain, Heather Bailey, Momo, Jenean Morrison, Amy Butler) - and its nice working with a different palette from what I have been recently. The basic layout will be something like this quilt, but with thicker white sashing in the central panel. I'm planning on photographing lots and writing it up as a tutorial once I'm done.

Fresh Sewing Day and WIP Wednesday - another one with no finishes, and more beginnings...

I still haven't had a finish for 2012. Lots of starts, but no finishes. Looking through what I've actually gotten done though, I'm not too upset - I just need to get a lot of these done in the next month :-)

I have finished my Outfoxed on the High Seas quilt top - and I'm still deciding how to quilt it, and whether to put a border on it (I am actually thinking I will - pretty sure I'll use a solid, just not sure what colour) Any suggestions would be most welcome!

I've started my Swoon quilt - four blocks done, another two cut and started (HSTs and flying geese done)

I've almost finished the piecing for my For the Love of Solids swap project:

I'm doing a smaller sized sparkle punch (squares are 2.5") and its going to be a sewing machine cover. Once I've finished piecing it, I'm going to hand quilt around the stars using embroidery floss. And I'm thinking a scrappy binding using the same colours as the stars...

And I've finally decided on my Name Game Swap quilt. My partner is into very country style quilty stuff, which is totally outside my usual comfort zone - so I'm going back to my pre-quilty-cross-stitch-obsession and cross stitching the centre part of the mini, and will do some patchworky stuff around the outside. We're going on a mini break tomorrow for four days so I'm hoping to get the stitchery done while we're away.

I have a semi-secret paper pieced project I'm going to start very soon. And there is a great little paper-pieced sew along happening over at A Labour of Love, inspired by the very awesome, paper pieced issue of Fat Quarterly which I am going to get involved in (check it out - the more the merrier!) Oh, and I've just been commissioned to make a couple of twin sized quilts for some little girls which is very exciting :-) A bit frazzled, I need my kids back at school so I have my nap-time quilting again!

I'm linking up to Fabric Tuesday, WIP Wednesday and Fresh Sewing Day.

Fresh Sewing Day
