Tula Pink Giveaway - and a Tula Quilt Finish!

I've been starting new projects at a ridiculous rate over the last few weeks - so I currently have six projects in various stages of completion that I'm actively working on. This is a bit ridiculous even for me, so I'm thrilled to say I have something that's actually finished to share today :oD. I'm especially excited that this quilt is finally finished. I started making it almost three years ago, when Tula Pink's Birds and Bees collection first came out. And I have a really awesome giveaway at the end for all of you Tula fans!

The pattern is the Colour Block quilt, designed by Tula Pink for her Saltwater collection. It's a really nice pattern to use larger scale prints, and it is one of those really clever and simple patterns to make. I chose kona solids for the background, in colours that would blend well with the prints. This quilt top has been sitting in my to-finish pile for a few years, wanting to be finished. The size (84" x 96") was what made me hesitate to quilt it - so when I was given a frame earlier this year I decided this would be the first quilt to go on the frame.

And the last as it happens, for a few reasons. When I set my machine up on the frame, I realised I only had about 4" of quilting space at any time, which meant my options for quilting were fairly limited. I decided to go for dense organic straight lines, and I adore the texture. The other negative while I was using the frame was the number of thread breakages I had while quilting. I'm pretty sure I was just expecting too much of my machine on the frame, and expecting it to stitch faster than it's capable of. The other thing that might have played a role is the fact that I used a high thread count flat sheet for the backing fabric. Whatever the reason, I haven't used the frame since!

I used a whole bunch of Aurifil 50wt threads to quilt it - many of them are variegated from Tula Pink's first collection for Aurifil. I love how the thread blends in some areas, but contrasts a lot in others (especially on the darker fabrics.) I'm yet to wash this one, but I'm a bit excited to see how it crinkles once it's washed.

I promised a giveaway today, and it's a pretty amazing one! The Fat Quarter Shop have offered a bundle of Tula Pink's latest collection Eden, in the Lotus colourway. I LOVE the colours in this bundle - they're a little different from Tula's usual shades of green and blue.

If you'd like a chance to win this bundle, please just leave me a comment and let me know what you'd make with it (or if you'd just stash it like I would!!) That's it, no hoops! The giveaway is open to everyone, and comments will close next Wednesday 14th October at 8pm AEST.

Please make sure you are NOT A NO REPLY BLOGGER - I have had lots and lots of no reply comments lately, so if I haven't replied to you it means I can't. If you're a no-reply blogger I have no way of contacting you and you will not be eligible to win this bundle :o)

I hope you're all having a wonderful week!

xx Jess

  1. Its just beautiful and a great way to display Tula's Eden fabrics. If I was to win I would want to make a 'me' quilt though not sure of design and would have to wait till I complete the 'gift' quilts. I have never done a 'me' quilt in the 10 years I have been quilting.

  19. Oh! they are gorgeous. I would start by making a beautiful mini quilt to hang on the wall. Then I might make another bag, and then maybe even a sew together bag. These are my favourite colours so I'd squeeze as many projects out of this bundle as possible. Thanks for the opportunity.

  43. beautiful fabric , i would use it in a quilt

    ReplyDelete
  44. My first thought is to stash it away to wait for the inspiration, of course you would have to take it out and touch it to get that inspiration. The fabric is so fresh looking with the greens so the inspiration would have to be something for spring (Australia) a Quilt for my youngest daughter, (29) as these are her colours and I haven't made her a quilt yet all the grandchildren come first.

    thanks Judy xxx

    ReplyDelete
  83. Love the colors, and I'd probably stash it to use for a quilt with unplanned colors. I dislike using a collection to make a quilt - too much matchy-matchy. ReplyDelete
  95. Oh, your quilt turned out fantastic! Do you know if that pattern is also sized for smaller quilts? I'd love to do a lap/throw size in that cool block.

Hm, I think I would stash the fabric for now, until just the right pattern came along. I'm currently working on a bunch of kids' quilts and I think this lovely Tula would be best for more adult purposes :-)

  127. Truthfully, I would stash the fabric if I won it. There you go, my guilty secret.....I stash all new fabric til it "cures" sufficiently to be cut and used. Its a bit like making bacon. I put it in a sealed container, in a cool dry place, then take it out to check and rotate it regularly. Eventually I cut into it, but only after a reasonable period of time, 3-12 months. This may also have something to do with the number of WIP's I have inprogress. Thanks for the giveaway. Tarnia.hodges at gmail.com

  128. At this particular point in time I would probably have to stash the fabric if I won. We are in the process of moving and I already have four quilts in varying stages that need to be finished. I don't do well with so many projects in progress. So they need to be completed. I love your quilt! It's gorgeous. Next time you use your machine on the frame try Superior So Fine thread #50. Please don't be one of those quilter's who swear they have to use only cotton thread on their cotton fabric. So Fine is a cotton thread with a polyester core made for quilting. It is a wonderful thread and will not harm your quilt in any way. And since it has a polyester core it will not break every 20 seconds. Trust me....you can't go wrong with it. If you aren't familiar with Superior threads please do go to their website and become familiar with their items. The issue with the high thread count sheet you used for backing was probably the wrong needle as much as the cotton thread. The right needle for the fabric as well as for the thread size. They need to be in sync. Hope that helps.

  129. What a fantastic giveaway! I started over a year ago to buy older Tula Pink when I could afford it, and the new designs, too, of course! I have one sea themed quilt that I want to make for my daughter and then do a totally Tula quilt for myself. I love yours. It is amazing! I haven't thought of using different solids in a background before. I need to get more of Tula's books. I just have the blocks book right now. Anyway, I think your quilt is fabulous and I hope Ms Random will choose me for your giveaway because Tula Pink is a genius!

  136. Hi just found your lovely blog and now following! Brilliant print and I'm new to Tula. Beautiful work...I would make a few small projects such as manniquin pin cushions and like so many crafty people stash it away for it's too pretty to use it all at once. Gorgeous print! Ruby x

  139. I love Tula Pink I would make my first Dresden quilt out of it for myself for a change, I've never made anything like this for myself whether it be sewing or crocheting I always gave it away to family or friends that fell in love with what ever I made and lately I've blade quilts for two great granddaughters, a daughter and my husband and currently making one for my son and his husband, so I would definitely make one for me to cuddle with when watching tv and hand piecing.

    ReplyDelete
  140. This is such an effective quilt - gorgeous!!!! I love the colours - Tula is amazing!

  141. Wow. What a great quilt. On my blog feed I sort of looked at it and thought it's not really my style and the color combination was unusual, but looking at the blog pictures. It's wonderful. It somehow reminds me of walking through a park and looking at sky scrapers and gives me the feel that each color shift is doing it again on another day or at another time. I think I'd have to stash the bundle for now. You set the bar very high for choosing just the right project and I'd want to wait for inspiration to strike that just felt right for the fabric rather than try to find a pattern for it.

  142. Oh man that quilt is gorgeous! if I won the fabric I would want to make a quilt with it... But it wouldn't be half as nice as yours, so I'd probably delay it for quite awhile!

  143. Love those aqua/green/blue colors! I would use these to make a quilt for charity.
    Thanks,

  144. I think if I own this, it would be stashed to be begin with. Gotta drool over new fabrics for a while.

  145. I'm headed to a workshop to learn sewing curves with my local MQG in November. This bundle would be an excellent choice for my first curves quilt! Love your Tula quilt!

  146. It might just get my sewing machine out for a non-kid project... That would be quite a thing!

  147. Well it would start out on the shelf with the rest of my Tula collection to be admired by all visitors but I would love to make a quilt for my own bed with this collection - gorgeous colours!!

  148. I love the new colours - I think they would have to be put into a quilt. Your quilt is very beautiful😀

  149. I've just bought Tula for the first time and loving it for fussy cut hexagons. That's what I would do with a new bundle

  151. I have some Eden now and with this I would start a quilt. Beautiful quilt you made, love it.

  152. Love your quilt! I would probably make something simple, featuring the prints in bigger blocks with solids, so the Eden is the star. I would make it right away, I've learned to use fabrics right away while I still love them!

  153. I think I'd use it for an overnight bag as.. well.. the other two Ive made are also Tula because her stuff just begs to be traveled with!

  154. Cool quilt and congrats on a finish, which is always awesome!

I have several patterns I've designed that I haven't had time to make--I'd probably use this bundle with some stuff from my stash to make up one of those.

  155. This is lovely! I love your blog - practical modern quilting. I am always excited to find other young quilters in Australia.

I'm all into quilt as you go bags after taking a class on craftsy so would probably use the fabric for that!

  156. I have to admit, I'm a bit of a stasher. I very rarely buy specifically for a project...unless it's to fill a gap ;)

  157. They would be stashed away for just the right project to come along. Thanks Jess, beautiful work as always!

  159. What a coincidence - I was just eyeing that bundle this afternoon. The fabric would go into the stash for now, since I have a project and a half ahead of it. Ultimately, it would turn into a quilt for my youngest daughter (pattern tbd).

  160. I would probably just stash it for future use at this point!
